At HIGHLAND Financial Advisors, we spend much of our time helping clients think about the future, including what they want to accomplish, what matters most to them, and how their financial resources can support the life they want to build.
Unsurprisingly, a strong community is built like a successful financial plan. It is nurtured via consistent effort, thoughtful decision-making, and a willingness to invest time and resources in something bigger.
That philosophy is an important part of our culture at HIGHLAND Financial Advisors. Throughout the year, members of our team dedicate time to volunteering, nonprofit leadership, youth programs, community initiatives, and other causes that matter to them.
Our recent efforts provided another opportunity to put that commitment into action.
HIGHLAND Financial Advisors’ Annual Day of Service
This past August, our entire HIGHLAND Financial Advisors team stepped away from our desks for our Annual Day of Service, spending the day helping renovate a home in Paterson, New Jersey.
Throughout the day, our team tackled a variety of projects, including ripping out old carpet, priming and painting walls, removing cabinets, cleaning up work areas, and helping prepare the home for the next stage of renovation.
Our Annual Day of Service allows our team to work together in a completely different environment. People learn new skills, divide up responsibilities, solve unexpected problems, and step in wherever another set of hands is needed.
There is also something rewarding about seeing tangible progress at the end of the day. A room that looked one way in the morning can look completely different a few hours later because a group of people showed up and got to work.
Our team has participated in community service projects for several years now, and each experience reinforces similar lessons for us. We’ve learned that meaningful progress comes from working together, adapting to the task at hand, and staying focused on what we came together to accomplish.
Those lessons continue to resonate each time we return.
Commitment Throughout the Year
Our Annual Day of Service is an important tradition at HIGHLAND Financial Advisors, but our commitment to the community extends well beyond a single day on the calendar.
Across the firm, members of our team contribute their time and experience in different ways throughout the year. That includes nonprofit board and committee involvement, volunteering with community organizations, coaching youth sports, supporting health-related initiatives, helping animal welfare organizations, and participating in programs designed to strengthen the communities where we live and work.
We believe that community involvement should be personal. Different people are drawn to different causes, and there is no single definition of meaningful service. What matters is finding ways to contribute that align with your interests and values.
Making a difference can take many forms. It might mean spending a Saturday volunteering, sharing your experience as a mentor, or simply showing up when an organization needs an extra set of hands. Individually, these actions may feel small, but collectively, they can have a significant impact.
Turning Values into Action
Every relationship at HIGHLAND Financial Advisors begins with understanding what matters most to the people we serve, and we return to those priorities as we help clients make decisions over time. The same principle applies outside of financial planning, where the causes we choose to support often reflect our own values and priorities.
Our Day of Service is one way our firm puts that belief into practice. It allows us to step outside of our normal roles and contribute directly to a project in our local community.
We always encourage clients to find ways to get involved with organizations and causes that are meaningful to them. Giving your time can provide a firsthand understanding of the work being done and the people being served, while creating opportunities to build relationships with others who share similar interests and values. Over time, that involvement can lead to a deeper connection with the organization and a greater appreciation of its impact on the community.
Generosity also does not have to begin with a check. Sometimes, it begins with a few hours and a willingness to help. Giving your time, sharing your expertise, building relationships, and simply showing up can be just as meaningful.
Service as a Shared Experience
Community service also provides our team with an opportunity to spend time together outside of our normal work environment. Shared experiences can strengthen relationships across a firm, and serving together adds a sense of purpose to the time spent together.
These experiences strengthen the relationships we rely on every day at HIGHLAND Financial Advisors. The setting may be different, but the qualities that make a service project successful are much the same as those that support our work with clients and one another: collaboration, accountability, adaptability, and a willingness to help wherever needed.
What We Do Matters
At HIGHLAND Financial Advisors, one of the ideas that guides our firm is simple: What We Do Matters. That applies to the financial decisions we help our clients navigate, the relationships we build with one another, and the role we choose to play in our communities.
Our commitment to service takes many forms throughout the year, reflecting the different causes and communities that matter most to our team. Meaningful impact is rarely achieved through a single enormous action. More often, it grows from people consistently finding ways to contribute and make a difference over time.
As we look back on another season of service, we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute and for the reminder that meaningful progress is often built through consistent effort over time.
